In May 2021, the Wuhan branch of CNPIEC was established in the Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone, also known as "Optics Valley of China." Established in 1988, it was approved as one of the first national high-tech zones by the State Council in 1991. In 2001, it was approved as a national optoelectronic industry base ("Wuhan Optics Valley") by the former State Development Planning Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology. It was designated a national bio-industry base in 2007 by the National Development and Reform Commission, the second national demonstration zone for independent innovation in 2009 by the State Council, and one of four national talent bases for central enterprises in 2011 by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. In 2016, it was approved as one of the first national demonstration bases for mass entrepreneurship and innovation, and as part of the China (Hubei) Pilot Free Trade Zone in Wuhan.
