The State Intellectual Property Office launches a pilot program for the approval of the use of special marks for geographical indication products

To implement the State Council's requirements on "streamlining administration, delegating power, and improving services" reform in the field of geographical indication management, and to solidly advance the reform of streamlining administration and optimizing services, and effectively improve the protection and management capabilities of geographical indication products. Recently, the State Intellectual Property Office released the Notice on the Pilot Reform of the Approval of the Use of Special Marks for Geographical Indication Products by the Office of the State Intellectual Property Office

The notice requires that the pilot work be based on the actual situation and fully leverage the existing work foundation to explore the establishment of a working system for the approval of the use of special marks for geographical indication products, strengthen the supervision and management of the use of special marks, form a replicable and promotable work model, and provide effective support for geographical indication protection work.

The notice requires that the pilot work adhere to the principles of reform and innovation, compliance and order, and balancing regulation and deregulation. It should explore the establishment of a system for approving the use of special marks for geographical indication products, establish channels for accepting applications, clarify work procedures, develop business regulations, strengthen the implementation of regulatory responsibilities, and strengthen support for the approval work. The pilot work will be mainly undertaken by provincial intellectual property offices (intellectual property management departments), and application materials will be submitted to the State Intellectual Property Office according to the application procedures and requirements.
